Yara Jones doesn't believe in sea monsters--until she becomes one.

When a hurricane hits her island home and she wakes up with fins, Yara finds herself tangled up in an underwater world of mysterious merfolk and secretive selkies. Both sides believe Yara can save them by fulfilling a broken promise and opening the sealed gateway to their realm, but they are battling over how it should be done. The selkies want to take her life. The merfolk want something far more precious.

Treygan, the stormy-eyed merman who turned Yara mer, will stop at nothing and sacrifice everything to protect his people--until he falls for Yara. The tides turn as Yara fights to save herself, hundreds of sea creatures, and the merman who has her heart. She could lose her soul in the process--or she might open the gateway to a love that's deeper than the oceans.

I thought the author had a very imaginative mind and created an intriguing world based on Greek mythology, but there were too many "holes" for me to truly get into this novel.

1. I did not find the characters in this novel had realistic reactions to the unfolding events. Yara wakes up underwater as a mermaid? Sure, that was taken in stride and she was swimming about like..well, a fish... in no time at all. I'm quite certain most people would shoot to the surface in a panic, first off, and be flailing around with their new tail like fish on dry land.

2. Once again, this novel is another sappy romance where every touch is like fire and they fall in love in 18 days. The last one I read was a week and a half, so it hasn't broken any records, but it was close. To boot, she's 18, he's centuries old. Talk about cradle robbing.

3. They spend the vast majority of their time on land, because, you know, they can instantly transform their tails into legs. What's the point of having mermaids in your book if they are on their legs the majority of the time?

4. Very little description or explanation is given about Eden's Hammock. Or where the Selkies are. Or where anybody is or what the world looks like for that matter.

5. The protagonist has it ....easy. Everything seems to be given to her. She always has her love interest there to protect her or show up in the nick of time. And the conclusion is simply unrealistic.

All in all, not a novel I particularly enjoyed, but it killed some time.

Tangled Tides The Sea Monster Memoirs Book 1 eBook Karen Amanda Hooper Reviews

This could have been so much better. The ideas behind the story are great and what kept me reading, the author really had them in this unbeatable situation and I was intrigued to see how it would end. Sadly I was very disappointed. There was a huge lack of images in the story. We get color descriptions all over the place but nothing gave me images, I had a hard time imagining this world and the people. I found the color rank thing weird. The ridiculous weed/cigarette play on words were so unneeded, the weed added nothing to the story. yeah they get sick without it, but really? It would have been enough that they just want to go home and be with their families, the weed thing was juvenile and annoying. Speaking of annoying wow did I hate Yara more and more as I read. Overall if the author spent more time with the story and not trying to shove it all into what 18 days? It could have been so much more.
Mermaids, Selkies, Sirens oh my! This story was so awesome it had it all, I loved every second of this fairy tale. Yara started out as a whiny bratty teen but then transformed into an awesome heroine that makes the story great. She lived a relatively normal life....... so she thinks, her parents weren't who she thought they were, her neighbor or her boyfriend. Sheesh talk about being blindsided. She was turned into a mermaid by Treygan and that changed everything she knew. She was the key to the gate that was closed to them eighteen years ago, now everyone is after her so they can finally go home. The race is on to get the gate open again Treygan will do anything it takes as well as the rest of the sea beasts.

This was a very very good love story, I loved the budding relationship between Yara and Treygan. They started out rocky though like I said Yara was a brat, Treygan found it hard to be around her at first until she started changing her attitude. The deadline is on to get Yara to the gate on time but with the relationship growing between Treygan and Yara that changes everything. This was a sweet clean book that you don't want to miss!
In this tale of sea creatures we follow 3 POV of Yara, Treygan, and Rownan. The idea behind it is intriguing; it did get me to download the book after all. But while the author tried hard to give us a rich background in lore, she fell flat with her three main characters - and the only reason why you even got two extra POVs is so yo could see how they really felt about Yara because the sea world revolves around her. I wish it weren't so, but it is a fact. Anyway, a whole new world is revealed, a crazy imaginative background story behind Medusa is given to us, and the truth finally comes out as to who Yara and the people most important in her life truly are.

Here's what I liked read above

Why I'm giving it a low rating - Mild spoilers Yeah, the lore is creative, but that's as far as it goes. Sadly, the story is ruined by the MC, Yara. She's your typical special snowflake. At first, it was just because she changed to a yellow immediately instead at the customary red. The reason behind that was actually not too bad, but you don't know until the end and by then, there are too many more special snowflakes about her. Yara is typically stubborn, whining, selfish, idiotic, and very I'm gonna do the thing because you can't stop me even though I know I shouldn't really do the thing.
*We also get the "I'm so in love with this person, they're my soul mate, so I can't possibly do anything without them at my side." deal. Let me starve and wither away. The author tried to explain it off as some weird thing to see an angel, but all that noise about how tragic and tortured she is just made me want to roll my eyes away from the book and never return to it.
*At this point, since everyone knows what Yara is and what her role is, I would assume she'd find out sooner than she really did. Why keep such a thing secret anyway? All it did was cause more problems. The Violets should have realized that, for real.
*Yara and Treygan's love. I didn't really believe in their emotions for each other. It was a sudden shift from Yara yelling about her boyfriend to wanting to kiss Treygan, and of course Treygan thought she was stubborn and childish to suddenly thinking she's his only shot at love, or whatever. Then that whole Lloyd saying it's been like that since she was 8. Yeah, you're not selling this Eskimo ice any time soon.
*Rownan's ending. After everything he did and went through to get to Vienna, you'd think we'd get to see him go through the gate. Since he had his own POV why not? Now I'm stuck assuming he's sulking in the shadows because he most likely fell in love with Yara anyway - go figure.
*Finally, poor editing.
